Hand Crafted Films

Our time in Spain is coming to and end. The wedding festivities were absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to start editing. It was incredible to be a part of a wedding from another culture and see the differences and similarities unfold.

I took this picture as we were walking the streets of Santiago de Compestela and have been inspired by it. There is so much hype surrounding the incredible sights that Santiago de Compestela has to offer, but this particular moment helped me re-prioritize as I was shooting. It’s was so easy to get lost in trying to focus on the huge Cathedrals and amazing visuals all around me, but what I really want people to connect to in our films is how each couple we spend time with has a unique story that has crafted their wedding day. I really hope that as we continue to develop as story-tellers, our films become and feel more and more “hand-crafted”. Just some food for thought. -M

Santiago de Compestela

Hi Friends,

We spent the day exploring Santiago de Compestela with Eliesa and Judd of Photogen Inc. It was amazing to see everything we have heard so much about. This place is indeed magical. Here are a few sights from the day. Enjoy. -M

Goodbye Norway

Well, we have left Norway behind. One thing that I will take away from our experience an appreciation for a balanced lifestyle. Norway is one of the most epic, beautiful countries in the world, yet people live very simply. If Norway’s landscape was in America, REI would blow up like nobodies business. However, in Norway it’s just a part of life. I think these images sort of explain what I mean, both shot on the same day within a 15 minute drive:

We had an amazing week in the land of our forefathers. We just landed in Spain last night and we are getting ready for the wedding. Santiago de Compestela is gorgeous, even from our apartment’s kitchen window. More to come soon! -MB

Norway Update

Hi Friends,
We are finally getting acclimated to the time change, lack of language skills and our bus route to and from the city. Our time here so far has been amazing and we are looking forward to the last few days we have here in Norway before heading back to Spain. I wanted to share a couple more images with you and let you know a short film piece is in the works too. We are due for a boat ride on the sea tomorrow, so I wanted to wait and include that. For now, enjoy a couple images. The first 2 are from Bryggen, the old fishing buildings in Bergen, the middle one was taken by an old boat slip at the home of famous composer Edvard Grieg, and the last 2 from the streets of Bergen. Hope all is well in the US of A. -M

A Wedding Abroad

Hello friends,

Today my wife and I arrived in Norway, part of a 2 week journey to a wedding I am shooting in Spain. After over 24 hours of flights, airport lounges, layovers, lost-luggage and head-bobbing naps, we are finally in Bergen, Norway. We will be here for a week and then head down to Spain for what will be an amazing wedding in Santiago de Compestella.

I will do my best to share parts of our trip with you, a few short films and hopefully some images that capture the essence of each day and experience we have.

For now, enjoy this little treasure I took while my wife Faith and I enjoyed some authentic Norwegian pizza. -M

MARIO + BRANDYN // Minneapolis, MN

I met Mario and Brandyn through Joynoelle, Brandyn’s dress designer and a good friend of mine. Mario and Brandyn have an absolutely incredible story. Brandyn touches on it in her vows, but in short when they were dating, Brandyn needed a kidney transplant and Mario was the exact match. I think that says more about sacrificial love than most of us will ever experience in our lifetime. Brandyn and Mario own and operate Sigh Yoga, a Minneapolis-based yoga studio that pays tribute to their amazing story and relationship. Also, please look at Eliesa from Photogen’s images from their wedding, which are amazing and tell their story in a way only she can do.

Enjoy this clip. -Matt

Inspiration Week Clip 2 // Seattle, WA

Hi friends,

Here’s another clip from my recent trip to the Northwest with my friend Spencer Combs. We spent a day running around downtown Seattle, taking in the sites and scenes. Here’s a little bit of what I saw. Enjoy! -Matt

JIMMY + LAURA // Minnetonka, MN

Our goal is to make wedding films that are unique to our clients. It’s so easy to template a day out, since weddings are typically composed of similar events:

1. Bride gets in hair and make-up

2. Groom puts on tux

3. Bride gets into the dress

4. They meet. She cries.

5. She walks down the aisle. He cries.

6. They kiss, dance and depart. Day over, we all cry.

Templates are great if you are trying to create a wanted poster for your missing cat in Microsoft Word. Templates don’t make great wedding films.

In walk Jimmy and Laura. They have a one-of-a-kind love. A story that is totally unique to them. A story that was authored years and months and days before their wedding day. Their day had many similarities to other weddings, the dress, the kiss, the tux, the reception, but what it had that nobody else has is their unique story. Laura was AMAZING and told me that at their first meeting she was going to read some of her older journal entries to Jimmy. She wanted him to know, from a very personal perspective, how excited she was to be marrying him on this day. She wanted him to hear how she felt as her love for him was being shaped by their relationship, way before their wedding day. That single act brought a whole new meaning to their day and to their film. I love that.  Enjoy this clip. -Matt

Inspiration Week: Seattle/Vancouver // [in-spahyuhrd]

Inspiration is something I constantly look for. So often I am victim to the idea that you can only be inspired by other people within you own field, so I spend hours and late nights blog-stalking film/photo people I admire. In walks “Inspiration Week”.

My good friend Spencer Combs and I decided to take a trip. So often when I travel, it’s about the destination. This trip had no destinations. Our mantra was simple: Wake up. Eat breakfast. Get in the car. See where we end up. No maps, no GPS, minimal cell phone usage. One day we were downtown, the next in a rainforest. All for one reason: to be inspired by what we saw.

Over the course of time I will be posting some short reflective pieces from our experience. Here’s a little taste of things to come. Enjoy. -Matt

The Capture Workshop : Wednesday, May 12th

The Capture Workshop

So here’s the deal:

We want more people doing amazing film/video. We feel the time has come to pass on some of the things we have learned over the years and spread the love and get more people involved.

We have decided to host a workshop to walk through the basics of DSLR filmmaking. If you currently own a 5Dmk2 or 7D or are thinking about buying one in the near future, this workshop is for you.

If you are a photographer, a videographer, or just someone that wants to document life, this workshop will teach a workflow that will add value to whatever you aspire to do.

Specifically, the workshop will cover:

1. The gear we use (cameras, lenses, stabilization, steadicam, linear tracking systems, audio/mics, etc)

2. An editing workflow for DSLR video (importing, converting, editing, music, exporting, etc.)

3. Story telling through film/video

4. Fusion

We are limiting this workshop to 20 attendees and the day rate will be $500, with breakfast and lunch included. We will have gear for you to demo, but feel free to bring your own DSLR as well.
